We did not know it, but our beginning actually started in 1974. That is when Desiree was introduced to horses by her Uncle Jeff.
By the time she was three she was taking riding lessons from Diane at Rolling Meadows. Soon it was time for her first horse show. Well, Uncle had the horse, PJ’s Cannonball, but she didn’t have a saddle. So entered Sharlene of Little ‘B’ Barn into our lives. Uncle took Mom to see Sharlene to get a saddle. So, at the age of three Desiree and PJ were in their first Leadline class.
As her interest in horses grew so did a great friendship between Sharon & Desiree and Sharlene. Before anyone knew it Sharlene had found a pony for Desiree which we boarded at Sharlene’s. Sharon did what she could to help out in the tack shop while Desiree was busy picking sand pails of rocks out of the riding ring to pay for her pony’s “board”. At 25 cents a pail full it was quite a job! When Desiree wasn’t “working” she was spending as much time as possible at the farm riding her pony and whatever else was there that she could ride.
Soon Sharon realized she had a 5 year old daughter who knew more about the horse world than she did. Sharon started to really listen and learn. When Sharlene decided to move the tack shop, Sharon offered to help in the store when she wasn’t working her regular job. Well, after two weeks Sharon quit her job and went to work full time in the tack shop. Desiree helped in the store doing whatever she could and when she turned 16 she came to work after school and weekends. After graduation Desiree worked full time until she left to give riding lessons and train horses, which she is still doing. Sharon stayed at the Little ‘B’ Barn for 28 years as the General Manager.
Then in 2004 after 4 years under new ownership Sharon found things not the same. She wanted to get back to the small friendly service that she enjoyed so much. We made the decision to open our own tack shop. So, on June 9, 2004 we opened the door to My Pony’s Closet. Don’t let the name fool you, we are a full service tack shop for horse and rider.
We hope you will become our friend and part of the growth of our new endeavor.
By the way, the pony in the closet is Desiree’s pony “DL’s Lil Sun” who spent the last 22 years of his life with us.
